BED & BREAKFAST, FRANCE

A place you have to go to...

Domaine du Mijarnier

Last friday, on my way to my cousin's wedding,
I discovered a fantastic place in the center of France, next to the city of Moulins (in the Allier department).

It is called "Domaine du Mijarnier".

It was at first meant to be a stable and an equatrian center (offering interships and equestrian journeys) but given the accomodation capacity, the hosts decided to also convert it into bed-and-breakfast for people coming to the region.

The whole domain represents 36 hectares with two ponds (one of 5 hectares), a 10-hectares wood, a lovely park and a 20 hectares meadow.

The perfect place for those who want to do some horse-riding, but also for those who want to relax, be close to nature and visit the area.

This seventeenth century hunting lodge offers 4 rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and one master suite (with 2 bedrooms).
Houses have been entirely refurbished; rooms are bright and their decoration is very soft and uncluttered.

A very peaceful and quiet place, indeed.

In the morning, you can enjoy a delicious french breakfast with toasts, fresh croissants and pains au chocolat, butter and marmelades, juices, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and if the chickens are not too lazy, you can also taste amazing soft-boiled eggs !

I woke up too late but if you wake up early (around 6 or 7 am) you can even see deers in the garden...

The hosts are very welcoming an friendly and appreciate meeting new people.
They are really passionate about horse riding and about the region they're living in, so they will be able to give you advice for restaurants and places to visit and they will also go for a walk with you around the domain.

I think we always visit the same kinf of places; famous places (big cities, next-to-the-sea places, and so on), so I was very happy to stop by this place.
It was a great way to discover an unexplored part of France and it made me want to go back there...
Moreover, it's nice to realize there are still lots of places to visit in our own country.

Prices:
Rooms: 70€ per night
Master suite: 130€ per night
Included breakfast

Places to see around the domain:
- Anne de-Beaujeu's Museum
- Golf course "Les Avenelles"
- Bourbon's Dukes' Castle
- Cathedral "Notre Dame de l'Annonciation"
- Theme park " Le Pal"

ALONE WITH MYSELF

10 or 15 years ago, being alone was related to be an old maid – with cats knitting on a rocking chair – or to old bachelor – even if men can easily pretend to be lady's men. Nowadays, being alone can be a choice and even sometimes luxury.

In the time of the simple use of a smartphone app is enough to make up for the physiological (and animal) need to feel less (physically) lonely for an afterwork, a dinner, an evening/night – or the four of them at the same time – it seems insane to move in through spite with someone, or with any nice body we can find (if we consider those things different).

Yes, nowadays, it's easier to choose people who you're going to drink a cocktail with, than choosing the cocktail itself.

If we don't want to, or don't have the chance to, or don't have the strength to, or don't feel up to begin something with someone, we still have the opportunity to be with someone on temporary contracts – for a few hours, a few days or weeks, with no exclusive rights but extendable if both parts are satisfied.
It means we can live on a "lonely" basis so-called "single life" and be "two", only when we want to. No traditional "couple" label and no couple way of life and habits.

It 's about being very happy to live alone and be proud of not needing someone special to do not-so-special things like going out for a drink, strolling along open-air markets, going to the cinema...
And if everything goes well, it could lead to something a bit more special like getting closer... and closer till forgetting we had nobody to had sex with – even if sometimes having sex doesn't require someone special either. But it's not the point today !

- Aarons Slim -

Yes, it is important to make a difference between living alone, being alone and feeling alone.

Definitions :

1 - Living alone : to live in an appartment without any roomate nor boy/girlfriend, living it as a choice and be proud of it, take it easy, having a certain amount of parties with friends, meeting friends of friends or strangers to have fun and keep busy, and really enjoy it

2 - Being alone : to observe the fact that there is actually nobody but us (after a party, for example) in this appartment, but being perfectly fine with it

3 - Feeling alone : to go back to the appartment after a big party with friends and the lousy dating of a stranger, observe situation n°2, completely forget about the good feeling experienced in situation n°1 (because of way too much drinking), feeling like we want to cry because we feel awfully-literaly lonely and lousy

If we normally don't go intentionally in this dispair situation (thanks to a liquid which was in olden days poets and writters' best friend), there is no reason to feel lonely because we chose it. "Choice" meaning getting used to whatever can happen when you choose to live alone: lonely moments are part of it.

Nowadays, this way of life is satisfying for lots of single persons (only 13% of them declare being "unhappy" about their situation) because they find a perfect balance between job and leisure, without incluying someone unique, regular and specific to it.

Nevertheless, it is important to notice that this way of life sometimes has to cope with difficulties... Particularly the sanctified act to build a family.
You know what I mean ! Sunday's lunch at Aunt's Lizzie, snacking at grandma's, or little Ben's baptism, the son of you friend Johanna, who by the way, has always spent her life being a couple since she learnt French kiss – in other words her 13th birthday.
These unformal meetings where you come alone and all the guests are looking at you half-compassionate, half-condescending, which makes you want to throw up the appetizers on their shoes, and ask: "So what about you ? Did you meet someone ?" or (if you live abroad) "Well, well, well, what about you ? You didn't come with your sexy Swedish girl/guy ?".

And then, you always hesitate over answering:

a. Aw... Well... No, not yet... Not really... Want some more champagn ?
b. No, I'm not really in a place where I want to settle down with someone so... I'm fine this way !
c. No but man, if you could see how I get laid, you would cry your eyes out and regret your marriage !
d. Do I ask you why you did not hire a nanny for your stupid kids who just ruined my clothes with their greasy hands ?
e. Auntie Lizzie, do I ask you if you and uncle Jack are still doing it ?

Because you have no other choice, you end up answering a. or b., and they often say this kind of conclusion (supposed to make you feel something but I can't define if it's feeling better or feelinf worse than ever): "Don't worry ! You'll find someone too !!". And then you can here a voice-off (the girl who's been married since her twenties, mother of three delightful children): "Yes but I THINK the more you look for it, the less you find it !". And in your head a little voice sounds like: "Yes but I THINK you're all pissing me off ! I am fine THIS WAY !"

After all, mentalities seems to progress more slowly than customs...

We are the Generation Y, even YZ, and in 30 years, all those questions of couples, singles, will probably be completely pointless and out of date, like same-sex marriages.
As family patterns elvolve with our habits, will norms and standards still exist ?

More than 50% of single persons keep giving vague answers regarding the satisfaction of their situation, saying that "it depends".

My conclusion is there is probably some (good) reasons being a couple...

FRENCHY BRAND

Even if I feel more "Parisienne" than "Lyonnaise" because I've lived there
I have to admit it was hilarious to type "Parisienne" in Google Images
and then to type "Lyonnaise" and compare !
I couldn't resist to "Like" this funny frenchy brand !

A funny way to identify with the lovely city of Lyon
And to enhance the image of girls living in this city.
No, women who live in Lyon are not made of sausages and saucissons !

"Parisiennes" are famous to be the most stylish women in the entire world.
Why wouldn't we add "Lyonnaises" to this definition ?!
After all, France has always been known to be fashionable content
But we cannot reduce it to Paris anymore !

From now on, LYONNAISE is gonna kick some ass !

SOL DO BRASIL

"Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in" sang Aquarius in 1969
It was only because Miu Queiroz wasn't born yet.

From now on Jupiter can align with Mars, and we can definitely let the sunshine in, thanks to the artist Miu Queiroz, who I luckily met during my studies.

When I didn't know she was singing – she's not part of those who brag about it – Miu Queiroz was the little franco-brazilian sunshine : always a bright smile on her lips, perfectionist hardworker, with a contagious positive energy. A "modestimidity" that made her keep the secret of her mellifluous voice for a long time.

She first told me she enjoyed writing her own texts to perform them – she's been doing so since she is 9. And then one day, she agreed to give me her pieces, and I ended up listening to her music. From this day on, Miu was not the girl I was sharing my marketing projects, cookies and coffees anymore: she was a subtle cocktail of Melody Gardot's energy, Diana Krall's jazzy tones, Katie Melua's pop-folk notes and Norah Jones' gentleness. With a unique voice and an additional secret ingredient "Do Brasil"...

She is mixing styles and gets her inspiration in different universes and enhances her texts and her music through what she experiences in her daily life.
I will not tell you the whole "biography of the artist" part, first of all because it would be cliché of chronicles specialized in music and second of all because, like the greatest artists, talent runs in her family and she has been immersed in a musical environment since her childhood [and this kind of thing gets on your nerves – especially when you know a million songs by heart but suck at singing !!!]

To keep it short, Miu Queiroz is talented and she is falling within the scope of an original musical type combining soul and pop-folk to bossa-nova tunes of her country of origin. Her melodies send us an invitation to total leisure, transport us under the sun even if we are in the darkest depths of a subway station. Thanks to her acoustic versions, Miu and her guitar would be able to save every single person on the verge of a nervous breakdown or burn-out, giving them an intense and deep breath of fresh air and sweetness.

By the way, her soon-to-be album will be entitled "Deep breath".
To follow her closely and to go along with your summer afterworks and relaxing times with taste and serenity, here are her Soundcloud and her Facebook pages.

SEA BREAM & RISOTTO RECIPE

I'm not a huge fan of cooking but when I feel adventurous, I enjoy trying some new recipes...
The following is one of them (for 2p):

Ingredients :

2 whole sea bream, cleaned and gutted
1 pack of risotto rice
1 courgette
1 mango
1 lemon
2 vanilla sticks
1 sachet of vanilla sugar
skimmed milk (or rice/almond milk)
white wine
curry
olive oil
+ prawns if you want to add one on top of your risotto

Directions :

Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C
Put olive oil and lemon juice to cover the bottom of your dish

Put water in a saucepan (3cm high) and bring to the boil (add a pinch of salt)
Then put the risotto rice in it
The rice is going to absorb the water
so you can add some more and alternate with 10cl of white wine everytime
Cut the courgette in very thin slices
Put it into the saucepan with the risotto on a low heat (around 20/30 minutes)
Then add curry (at your conveniance)

At the same time
Put half of a glass of milk in a pan
Add 2 teaspoons of vanilla sugar
And vanilla sticks

Lay the fish into the dish
Baste it with the vanilla sauce (not all of it)
And bake for 20-25 min
(Fish is done when the dorsal fin can easily be removed)
Give a regular stir to the risotto
And baste the fish once or twice so it won't dry

Cut the mango in small squares

When fish and risotto are ready
Serve them into a flat plate
Add the vanilla sauce and mango squares

Dinner's ready, you can enjoy it with the rest of your bottle of wine ! Watch out fishbones and "Bon appétit !"

Let me know if you liked it !

FOMO Generation

When I see a 14-year-old girl having 172 "likes" on her profile picture, I wonder what would be our lives without this faithful – and from now on listed on the stock exchange – friend, named Facebook, more social showcase than social network.

I read a few articles, watched some TV reports, and apparently, there would be a new craze in western countries... An epidemic that spreads out – maybe not as fast as Ebola – but almost.
But of course, it's a rich kind of Ebola (something for wealthy people), not something that eradicates us very quickly. It's something cerebral, more complex, more tortured, something more hip: the FOMO. [Nothing to do with the Femen nor the Omo laundry powder]

The « FEAR OF MISSING OUT»

People with Ebola fear missing something like healing, or life. A fear which is a bit medieval, let's be honest...
To sum up, the FOMO is: observe that we are all alone, feeling like shit, in a lousy place while others (e.g. our super Facebook friends) are taking it easy on an paradise island on the other side of the world. And this is due to the different kinds of post on social networks.

Like in any kind of disease, I guess there are several levels, different steps :

- Step 1 : light FOMO
I 'm alone in my appartment in Paris, it's a rainy sunday. Yesterday, I was partying hard, in a nightclub where there was nothing to hit on, nothing to bring home but lousy people. So I drank to forget that I was alone. This afternoon on FB I saw pictures of my friends living in the South of France, drinking a glass of rosé under the sun . Ouch ! Why am I not there ? (I'm comforting myself thinking that rosé + hangover would never have been a good idea)

- Step 2 : moderate FOMO
I 'm alone in my appartment in Paris, it's a rainy sunday. Yesterday, I was partying hard, in a nightclub where there was nothing to hit on, nothing to bring home but lousy people. So I drank to forget that I was alone. My friends went to Michael Jackson's concert (yes, I know, the guy is dead but it's hypothetical and it's my chronicle, I'm writing what I want). This afternoon, I saw their pictures: I am lousy people, my life sucks. The only way to make me feel better would be to realize that  Michael Jackson was musically dead anyway before dying for good.

- Step 3 : heavy FOMO
I 'm alone in my appartment in Paris, it's a rainy sunday. Yesterday, I was partying hard, in a nightclub where there was nothing to hit on, nothing to bring home but lousy people. So I drank to forget that I was alone. Friends of mine (a couple, actually) leaft for the Maldives because "winter's way too long when you live in France". Pictures on Facebook: these two sons of b... lovebirds are lying on their deckchair: next to them, a cocktail of exotic fruits, a 5 stars palace, in front of them a huge pool and in front of it the sea. And as well as I know them, it's a hotel where kids are not allowed, in other words: Heavan on Earth. I take a look at my aspirin tablet: I hate my life, I'd prefer to be Michael Jackson (not to say DEAD), to make this statement.

The second angle of the FOMO is also the fear of missing an action, or something that would happen on a social network like a comment, the reply to this comment, a like, the like of this like, a retweet, an add to favorites, a new follower... of something posted beforehand.
It is indeed this disease that make us look frenetically our smartphones up, more than 150 times a day. Having to connect every half an hour, every hour, or every day (for the healthiest minds of us), to track the least one can do which is linked to us. Being part of the 75% of people that connects as soon as they are awake (source: Digital Detox, Canal +).

We have all experienced the situation when we're having a drink with someone (friend, sibling, colleague) and this someone can help checking his phone and his "news feed". As if what happens on social networks was more important that being here and share this moment together. As if what happens on the web could not wait. A kind of EasyJet of our virtual lives "You are late, We don't wait".

During philosophy classes, I learnt that the moment you declare being or doing something while you are actually doing it, we stop being what we were saying we were. We are beyond. If you declare, when having a fit of the giggles, "Oh my god, what a laugh !", the enjoyment will stop immediately. And so the laugh.
Well, it's the same thing for social networks' posts: taking a picture when we are getting to a wonderful place, or eating an amazing meal and then BANG, the heart of our attention is not focused on what we are doing but on its emphasis, its exposure in front of everyone. We forget to really enjoy it.

However, we all do down-to-earth things, less glorious things, things that are less marketable, that are just common. Those things are everyday-life things from eating yogurt in front of TV and grocery shopping to go to the bathroom. I am ready to bet that the FOMO is coming to the bathroom with more than 50% of us.
Well, to hell with it, we need reading... No, honestly, let's take a book !

- Into The Wild, 2007 -

So what if we learn how to live life the fullest again ? We could learn how to enjoy this yogurt under a soft blanket again, just Him and us, without #yummy #instafood # Danone #foodporn.

P.S: Steve Jobs himself forbade the iPad use to his children...

TINDER Generation

HARDER - BETTER - FASTER - TINDER ?

Tinder, for those who do not live in our times, it's a dating app, on which you can subscribe through your Facebook profile, using our geolocation to unearth our potential dates.
That is the official definition.

Of course, there is also an unofficial definition (which is much more interesting, I have to admit it). Tinder embodies the zapping society we are living in.
When you subscribe, it's funny at first. Pictures pass before our eyes, we can see everything: a guy/girl with his/her big bottles of vodka and champagn in nightclubs, a young lady professional of selfies with either a big lack of self-confidence in real life or an oversized ego, a shirtless lame guy tightening his muscles so strong that he is going to fart in his trunks, a girl lying on the beach making everyone believes that she is "always tanned and naturally stunning"...
Some of those profiles tend to appear very often on our screen but we can still see the whole human diversity - and isn't it fabulous ?!
Not really, I can tell you.

Even if Tinder reflects all the components of our society in real time (and real place) and represents the fact that there is something for every taste on this planet, we can still notice some problems...

The first issue concerns the image we are giving to others. Because lying by posting only flattering phoney pictures can be a problem if we really want to meet the Tinder person we matched with. Deceit isn't accepted.
We are obviously talking about physical aspect here... I know, it can be politically incorrect but:
1/ We have no time to waist
2/ We do not even care (only the Tinder usuer who has watched the common interests before his target's face can judge me)
It is a "based on appearance" selection (and the goodlooking appearance) but that's the way it goes.

However, you are not sheltered from someone way to small or way too tall, way too fat or way too skinny and so on. Yes, because there is no scale on pictures like there is on geography maps !
Anyway, we can still deal with these kinds of problems (at least more or less).

The issue that sounded the most interesting to me but also the most disconcerting, it's the power of 2.0 on dating.
If we reconsider the exact meaning of "meeting", the Collins Dictionary says: "to come together (with), either by design or by accident; encounter". Which lead us to assume that the physical contact is essential, and therefore Tinder is breaking the rule.

Once we had fun, once we re-boosted our ego every 4 days, let's be honest, every human being normally constituted experiences a lack of something. This something is the powerful game of seduction, the whole "hitting on" stuff that two people feel when they randomly meet in a place that only destiny gathered. I am talking about the eye contact from one end of the bar to the other, about getting closer, about "Can I buy you a drink ?", about nice talks and intimate whispers...

Tinder cuts corners to that kind of moments, and directly jumps to the square "BED" for the horniest, or to the square "meeting and talking into a public place" with someone who was only fictional so far. And it feels weird ! Even weirder if the person is physically disappointing. Pretending having a good time during one hour (maybe two ?) with someone we'll say "See you soon" but secretly wish "I hope I'll never see you again", makes us want to stop and delete Tinder, because it is full of FAKES. And for the most humane of us, it make us have a guilty conscience because we are not that hypocritical... (Are we ?)

And yet, when we get bored (let's be honest again), when we want to fill our ego, we go back on Tinder, to check if we can match (and match for good this time). We drop "likes" galore and, in the end, we'll talk to less than a third of them. Because that's also the way it goes.

WATCH OUT (1): Sunglasses can hide a bovine look and a hat can easily hide baldness.

WATCH OUT (2): I know people who became a real couple...
